The PcapNG file format was born around 2004, partly as a result of an email thread regarding a “ proposed new pcap format” on the tcpdump mailing list. The PCAP file format supported storing packet records, which contained a timestamp, length and the data for each captured packet. The original libpcap file format, which is often referred to as just “PCAP”, was created by Van Jacobson, Craig Leres and Steven McCanne around 1987 as part of the work they did on tcpdump and libpcap.
